SELF-LED SUMMER LEARNING WITH EXPLORE MANIA

Explore Mania offers a unique opportunity for children in Mississauga this summer with camps that allow kids to explore their personal interests. The program is led by Ferzana Ladha, a mother of 3 and teacher with a Masters in Education. This will be her first summer offering this self-directed learning program.

Ferzana says that kids “learn so much in school but don’t have the time to explore the aspects that interest them. I want to build a space where children have the opportunity to explore what they want to learn.”

Kids with tabletKids ages 7-11 will work in groups of 2 or 3 sharing an iPad or computer. The camp will take place at St Jude’s Academy in Mississauga. Topics for exploration include Ocean Discovery, Robots, The Human Body, Geology, Coding, Sports, Structures and Space.

Ferzana will show campers how to safely navigate through the web before they begin their research. This includes online etiquette, cyber safety and understanding online resources. Ferzana adds that they “will use a variety of different apps and resources as well for kids to get as much information as possible.”

Campers will show what they have learned by adding information they’ve gathered to a large mural paper. Parents will also be involved with their children’s experience through following social media feeds on Facebook and Twitter. This way parents can support their children through seeing what they’ve spent the day discovering.

Magnify GlobeThere will be a balance of academics and fun for Explore Mania campers. They will enjoy breaks from learning through physical activities like games and sports, as well as activities that will encourage them to communicate as a team. Ferzana explains one activity with “two teams who have same bag of materials and they have to build a bridge that is identical to the other team’s without being able to see each other.”

With the children free from rules over what they have to learn, they have endless opportunities for discovery.  Plus, “since it’s not just school making them, they are more likely to retain the information,” Ferzana explains. “They get to express who they are.”
